Description

Honolulu Dance Studio (HDS) began in 1986 with nine (9) elementary school girls directed by Cathy Izumi. They teamed together as a performing company (Honolulu Gurlz Dance Company) based at Danceworks Studio in Kaimuki. In 5 years the dance program expanded to include several Divisions—Keiki, Junior, Teen, Senior, Adult and Professional. The contemporary dance studio moved to the Waterfront Athletic Club in 1991, and in 1992 became the HDS and Honolulu Dance Company (HDCo.) of today. In October of 2008, HDS moved to their current location at 1030 Queen Street.
HDCo. performers evidence their versatility and enthusiasm in their performances. The veteran and newest dancers are featured monthly at Ala Moana Center Stage, and they perform at various community and charitable events throughout the State. Over the years, the performers have traveled throughout the country to perform and/or compete nationally. HDCo. has been privileged to receive an abundance of top honors and continues to represent Hawaii at the International Dance Excellence Convention in Los Angeles.

Although the developing performer is always in a process of improving his/her dance versatility and technique, HDS stands firm on training fundamentals that require dancers to be wholesome, upright individuals. Students must meet and balance intense dance curriculum requirements, sound academic grade point averages and healthy studio relationships that eventually prove them worthy in the community they will one day serve—in dance or any other profession.
